Even though we may try to protect ourselves from the sun with sunblock or perhaps even avoiding it whenever possible, there are going to be some times when we find ourselves outside and perhaps overexposed to the sunlight. A sunburn can be a very painful thing, and whenever the sunburn becomes severe, it can actually cause some medical issues for us, such as sun poisoning. That is why it is important for us to make sure that we are doing everything possible in order to avoid getting sunburned, even if we have to be exposed to the sun regularly.
One of the ways that this is achieved, believe it or not, is through the diet that we eat. Many people don’t realize the fact that we can actually eat various types of food that can assist us in being able to be exposed to the sun, without having to worry about getting burned as easily. A good example of this is sweet potatoes, and if we are eating sweet potatoes within 24 hours of going out in the sun, we are actually receiving a measure of protection, even before we apply the sunblock.
The reason why this is the case is because sweet potatoes (also known as yams) contain beta carotene, which helps to protect the skin and can allow us to be exposed to the sun for longer periods of time. Many parents will make sure that their children eat sweet potatoes the day before they go out in the sun, and it would be a good idea for us to do the same. Of course, sweet potatoes are not the only things that contain beta carotene and we may want to also eat carrots for the very same reason. In fact, if we have a juicer, we can make ourselves a cocktail that will give us some real protection against the sun.
Carrot juice is a favorite for many people.If you drink carrot juice regularly, it will help to strengthen you against the sun by building up the beta-carotene in your body. The same is also true if you juice a potato, although this is not something that many people find as appetizing.
If you do plan on eating these items in order to prevent sunburn, it’s important to note that the beta-carotene does not last in your skin indefinitely. That is why it is important for you to eat these things immediately before going out.
